LIFE URBANGREEN: which environmental benefits for our citizens?

The LIFE URBANGREEN project was completed in December 2021. The aim of the project was to integrate the platform GreenSpaces with new tools to address the challenges of climate change and to support local administrations, urban gardeners and private companies in the transition management for cities working on urban resilience. Partners of the project were R3GIS (coordinator), ZZM (the department managing the green areas of Kraklow), ProGea 4D, the University of Milan and Anthea (the in-house company managing the green areas of Rimini).

From 2018 to 2021 scientific data was collected on trees of the most common species in Rimini (Italy) and Krakow (Poland) in order to better understand the benefits they are generating for citizens. Satellite data, Laser scans and research were carried out in order to calculate the following ecosystem services provided by trees: CO₂ sequestration, particulate absorption, air cooling through transpiration. Results show performance differences among distinct tree species that have been studied by the project and indicate that CO₂ assimilation, cooling and air amelioration capacity of trees depends on species, location (weather in parks or streets) and weather data.

These results were converted into algorithms, which now can be applied to all our customers on the platform GreenSpaces:

  1. METEO module to use weather forecasts to improve green area management

  2. BENEFITS module to calculate the ecosystem services of trees

  3. WATER module to irrigate trees when needed

  4. WORKS

Have you already seen the handy brochure summarizing the most important findings from the last three years of studies? Although algorithms for calculating ecosystem services might appear complex, within this brochure you will find highly accessible explanations together with graphics that visually introduce how they work. The Layman’s Report is now available in four languages: English, Italian, German and Polish. You can download the digital versions from the project's website. Enjoy the reading!

Last but not least, one of the most innovative aspects of the LIFE URBANGREEN project was the involvement of citizens through public portals, where data on ecosystem services provided by around 90.000 trees is calculated on a daily and yearly basis.
