Crossborder Biodiversity Tool Box - BioBox Project

We're excited to announce the launch of the Crossborder Biodiversity Tool Box - BioBox, an innovative collaboration between Italy and Austria aimed at enhancing biodiversity in urban and private green spaces. Funded by Interreg IT-AT, the BioBox project will run from January 2025 through March 2027, bringing together key partners: R3GIS, FH Kärnten, and the Università of Udine’s Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Animal Sciences.

Urban biodiversity is crucial not only for environmental health but also for improving human quality of life. Yet, biodiversity in private and urban green areas often remains overlooked. BioBox addresses this gap by providing an accessible, practical, and cost-effective toolkit designed specifically to boost populations of pollinators, birds, and bats.

R3GIS will play a pivotal role, leveraging the GreenSpaces platform to evaluate and monitor ecosystem services within selected pilot areas. Our team will develop tools for biodiversity monitoring, incorporating sensors to track species diversity and habitat quality. This effort will be complemented by clear guidance on how to maintain and enhance biodiversity over time.

Throughout the project, we’ll be closely collaborating with municipalities, organizations, businesses, and individual citizens, offering step-by-step instructions to implement and sustain biodiversity-friendly practices. Aligned with key European policies such as the Green Deal, Biodiversity Strategy, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, BioBox aims not only at ecological improvement but also at raising awareness about biodiversity and sustainability.

Stay tuned as we share updates, milestones, and opportunities to participate in the BioBox journey.
